Not Afraid

[verse]
When a boy I was
unencumbered by my ignorance
all the rules I didn’t know
had no hold on innocence
inclinations high and low
made great and small sense.

Growning up I made
trouble for my Mom and Dad
it was good for them to see
their creation being free
two horizons east and west
neither one bad
both in the left and the right eye
filling me with sky.

[chorus]
Not afraid of the quick crossing over
not held back by my feet. If
I stayed here I would turn to rock never
more to walk like a man.

Bigger than day brighter than blood
dark as night’s ghostly guide
into the ship gripping my mind
not afraid, not afraid.

[verse]
Then I got married
I put on the armour and fought
I attacked and defended
I remembered and forgot
the dragon of love raised its head
I was Lancelot with second thoughts.

In light of raw fact
I constructed many theories
wrestling with them broke my back
I improved them on my knees
every year has its own story
every star speaks to the black
in its own language.

[chorus]
Not afraid of the quick crossing over
not held back by my feet. If
I stayed here I would turn to rock never
more to walk like a man.

Bigger than day brighter than blood
dark as night’s ghostly guide
into the ship gripping my mind
not afraid, not afraid.
