Under Influences

Under the sun. Shy of the moon’s
borrowed glory and under the influence
of right, left, east, west and
transient blossoms.

Where is a place for an artist
in this knockabout, getting-brown
left-alone cemetary of a world?
Is it between the smile and the frown,
or is it between the tooth and the pearl?

Where does the scientist belong?
The turner-over of mossy rocks
asking hard questions at a funeral
who explores where the farmer walks
who looks for genius in the animal?

Where hides the entranced prophet
the mystic dancing to unheard strains?
In the closet stuffed full of the unused?
In the pituitary between sparking grains?
In a commandment half-refused?

Under the sun. Shy of the moon’s
borrowed glory and under the influence
of right, left, east, west and
transient blossoms.
