The Marriage Train

I can tell by the way she lies there breathing
good morning is a few miles away and arriving
out of a dream of lonesome whistling over
mountain passes and quietly across
the satisfied trestle.

I love her around the world and back again
until the sun spends every penny
until ‘until’ doesn’t mean what it used to
until the end waves goodbye from
the happy caboose.

We wake when we wake and we never
raise our voices endeavoring to stop
the rain from falling or the snow from blowing
because it is almost dawn
and the trains are on time.

Personality is a tendency of tendencies
marriage is an integration of intensities
from ocean to ocean is hand to hand and
from the earth to the moon and stars
we do what we can.

We wake when we wake and we never
raise our voiices endeavoring to stop
the rain from falling or the snow from blowing
because it is almost dawn
and the trains are on time.
