Judge of Character

I cannot tell if it is the wind
or if the water is doing it
making such a racket in the late
afternoon’s napping canyon.

Unlike a separate eye I see
faces in the pages of the thick
book I leaf and skim through
walking through the city.

I am a good judge of character
and everyone is a character
I am a good judge of character
except for my own.

I have in the past dealt with death
I have blessed them on their way
I have pled for the suspension
of the natural to save the person.

The farmer chooses and rigs the crop
the nomad knows where to go
to locate survival. The hunter tracks
the qualities the judge lacks.

I am a good judge of character
and everyone is a character
I am a good judge of character
except for my own.
