One Lucky Day

In a park nowhere to sit
reading news from back to front
waiting for the long afternoon to split
into the lost and the hunted.

Shot in the leg the sun
shines down upon the fortunate
recovering in their white sheeted
hospital beds under immanent
lingering fortune.

I write an all-american song
part country part soul
not too weak not too strong
mined out of a hundred foot hole.

We’ve got two countries here
divided by a wall of money
divided by rivers of influence
divided by having and having not.

In the public park waiting
for some music while hesitating
for some friends to start debating
everyone not showing up.

Shot in the leg the sun
shines down upon the fortunate
recovering in their white sheeted
hospital beds under immanent
lingering fortune.
