Eight Hours

Eight hours
I can wrestle with alligators
in rivers flowing with flowers
I can tame the wild barracuda
and drain the valley of all its stories.

Eight hours
there’s not enough work in the world
I can’t tackle with a flair
clean all the bathrooms and write a report
in a corner office and a swivel chair.

[chorus]
Be not a denier of the truth
close your eyes be more than mouth
men and women are ghosts and totems
children m,ore than obedient atoms.

[verse]
Eight hours
in six or seven it is not the same
one is smooth, two are coarse
three need a melodic silence
the final one is a fierce farce.

Eight hours
free as a bee, light as ocean
stepping across continents
swimming in my own potion
logic feeding on evidence.

Be not a denier of the truth
close your eyes be more than mouth
men and women are ghosts and totems
children more than obedient atoms.
