When the water is blue you swim
and big fish will swim with you
do not go in alone or else
you will be kissed by surprise.
When the water is clear take care
you think you can see but beware of
assumptions coming out of the corals
to breathe for you and grab your ankles.
When the water is green and soft
underfoot watch out for the turtles.
They are breeding and unpredictable.
It’s their lake. Don’t push it.
Streams babble until they come together.
The bay speaks the language of tides.
The harbor is a cop, the delta a jokester
the shelf an enabler, the deep a mobster.
When the water invites you in do not go.
It will eat you up like a generation gap.
Two feet down, ten feet, and what if
your going in does not come up?
