Premature Lullaby

Peaceful on the chest
eyes closed and making fists
mother’s pulse quickens
and father’s ego gets crushed.

The new and the lovely
the smallest of the days ahead
full of discovery
but not aware of it yet.

Sweet as spring wet and wild
your mother’s father loves this child.

She came to us early
too fast and a little small
a morsel of a legacy
of souls and bodies all.

Nameless and four and a half
potent pounds of strong will
owning nothing she has
many kingdoms of good will.

Sweet as spring wet and wild
mother’s father loves this child.
