Americana

Where does Americana come from?
Out of holes dug deep in the earth
mining black stuff for what it’s worth
worth more than the lives of men.

Where does Americana come from?
Picked from fields of silt and corn
before they turned to dust and scorn
before all dreams were in California.

[chorus]
Songs from misery and joy
songs from family
from making the best of every day.

Where does Americana come from?
Starting down-river and spreading upward
through every garden and every orchard
from the farm back to the neighborhood.

Where does Americana come from?
Out of slavery and into the unions
out of the factories and into the classrooms
out of the dancehalls into the ballrooms.

Songs from misery and joy
songs from family
from making the best of every day.

Where does Americana come from?
From the oldest melodies and poems
from all the colors in our tongues
from all the nations we call home.

Where does Americana come from?
From the steering wheel, from the sewing machine
from knowing nothing but the sight unseen
in the alley, the penthouse and the inbetween.
