Uncle Nelson

[a song based on news]

You can’t tell about people
until you’ve known ’em a long time.
You gotta see ’em in action
before you know what’s in their mind.

I’ve known my uncle Nelson
longer than I knew what a year was.
He used to switch between
being too funny and then too serious.

He’d stay locked up at home
then disappear for long vacations.
No kids and no wife but
he was a pillar of the congregation.

My daddy was our scoutmaster
weeks at a time we’d go camping.
One year he took along his brother
and we came back after one weekend.

Passed on in the blood
whether thick or thin
is judgment bad or good
where we are going or
where we have been.

Myself and I’m sure you too
we have our dark genes
but we squeeze them through our sinews
and brains and they come out clean.

Family all dressed in black
we just put Uncle Nelson in the ground.
Nobody wants to talk about
what the cops may or may not have found.

Now I look at my relatives
or people I grew up with.
Are they humans or animals?
What’s in their cellar or attic.

Passed on in the blood
whether thick or thin
is judgment bad or good
where we are going or
where we have been.
