on the nose

Here comes up another work of art
worked on mallet and stylus blurring
distinctions deemed only merely
painted on leaving clearly hidden
the geographies chiseled by sun.

Not by moonlight carved or by slogan
nothing stylish on second third thought
no facial features bought in bargain
more permantently paying than picked up
more apple seeds than shock value.

Here come two works of art in one
face to face imprinted hip high
in favors given and withheld cuttingly
in tight-lipped thrust in group knit
habits of fiat via pure allowance.

Does it matter that much if the art
is a man’s or a woman’s when both
will pass on on the nose the shape
of a lip or slip of the tongue forsooth
a bone’s turn springs the cheek’s wrinkle.

Worked at played and made law
was it copied or lifted out of the ground
washed out by those grimaces guided
widened deepened in uncritical bath of
the wordy water that soaks in fills out
the starch of promises made anciently.

Three in one now and more often giggling
stock spreading laughing ways outward
locally continentally maybe even sunward
grandfather grandson and father followed
by mom and grandma and the little
skipping expression of tissue deep grammar.

Fly’s landing the hummingbird’s hover
the peck of the neck of the begging bird
the imagination exercised enough to learn
neither the handle nor the spout is the pot
the after comes from the before somehow.

Here comes up another work of art
worked on mallet and stylus blurring
distinctions deemed only merely
painted on leaving clearly hidden
the geographies chiseled by sun.
